It's that time of year again.
No, it's not Christmas. Although with all the darn music and decorations you'd think so.
No, it's National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).
Now, I wasn't going to write this year. It's not that I don't have over a dozen story ideas, it's just that I haven't had as much time. I am pregnant with my fourth kid (or kids, we aren't sure yet - oy), I work full-time, have a home (okay apartment, but close enough!) to take care of, and am very tired most of the time. But my colleague and fellow writer, Chris Canary, and fellow unpublished writer David decided to get me going and writing again.
So, here I am, with a new writer's page. Feel free to send me your blog if you are a writer, reader, book reviewer, etc. and I will at least visit, if not add it to my blog.
About me: I love reading most genres. My favorite writers include Orson Scott Card and Anne Rice. I especially love the classics - Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, The Count of Monte Cristo, 10,000 Leagues under the Sea, etc. I enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, romance, historicals, mainstream fiction, and mysteries more than other genres. I am not a big fan of westerns or action thrillers like what Clancy writes. I am not Christian, so while I can appreciate "inspirational" writing as a genre, I do not read it.
Okay, so what about NaNoWriMo? NaNoWriMo is a month-long event where writers from across the globe connect with each other and spend the whole month writing a short draft. The goal is 50K words, which is about 1667 or so words per day. For many writers, this is a lofty goal. Some writers only write during NaNo, and use the rest of the year to rewrite and/or plan for the next year. I am not a one-book-a-year writer, and so I could never do this. But for others, it works very well. I am happy that we have something that inspires so many aspiring writers to put pen to paper (or words to keyboard, as it more often is).
What motives me to write for NaNoWriMo this year? This year, I am motivated by two big things:
1) Scriver at 50% off (open only to NaNoWriMo winners!)
2) NaRoWriMo
Okay, so what is NaRoWriMo? Well, I'm glad you asked. NaRoWriMo is something (as far as I can see) that is being encouraged by Avon romance (see: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/special-offers-and-greetings-from-nano-sponsors/threads/83704).
So here's the deal:
1) Write a romance during NaNo (over 50K words)
2) Submit it to Avon Impulse by December 1st with the tag "NaRoWriMo"
3) It goes in front of editors at Avon and gets considered for publication
Pretty inspiring, right? I found this after I had already decided to write a romance that had been gurgling in the back of my brain, so when I saw this I did a little happy dance. I mean, it's a perfect opportunity, right?
Yeah, that's what I thought too.
If anyone else is writing a romance for "NaRoWriMo", leave me a message! I'd love to hear how you're doing.
